Tax Return Submission in Bangladesh

Filing a prepared return correctly, on time, through the right channel, and getting proof you filed.

Quick answer

Tax return submission in Bangladesh means lodging a completed income tax return with the NBR, either online through the e-Return system or physically at your taxes circle, and paying any tax due. Once accepted, you receive an acknowledgement and can download or obtain the PSR (Proof of Submission of Return). Individuals generally must submit by 30 November unless the NBR extends the date.

Tax return submission is the final step after preparation, but it has its own rules and pitfalls. You must use the correct channel, pay any balance through an accepted method, attach or upload the right documents, and keep proof. A return that is prepared perfectly but submitted late, or to the wrong circle, can still cost money.

This page covers the mechanics: online versus manual filing, deadlines, paying the tax due, what you receive afterwards, and how to fix mistakes with a revised return. For the earlier work of computing tax and reconciling wealth, see our tax return preparation page. We also cover the documents you should keep after filing and how long to keep them.

Online e-Return or manual submission?

The NBR's e-Return system lets individuals file online using their e-TIN and a mobile number registered in their own name with their NID. The system computes tax from the figures entered, accepts online payment and issues the acknowledgement and PSR immediately. The NBR has made online filing mandatory for certain groups of employees and has been widening that list, so check whether you fall within it.

Manual submission is still used, particularly for companies and complex cases. The signed return with schedules and attachments is lodged at the taxes circle shown on your e-TIN, and you receive an acknowledgement slip. Tax fairs and special service centres have also accepted returns during the filing season in some years.

Submission deadlines

  • Individuals and most non-company taxpayers: Tax Day, generally 30 November
  • Companies: generally the 15th day of the seventh month after the income year ends
  • Extensions: the NBR sometimes extends Tax Day, and individual extensions can be applied for at the circle, but extended filing may affect certain benefits
  • Late filing: the Act imposes consequences such as additional tax or interest and can restrict rebates and exemptions

Paying the tax due with your return

Any balance of tax after TDS, AIT and advance tax must be paid before or with the return. Accepted methods include online payment through the e-Return system, A-challan through the government's automated challan system, bank payment through Sonali Bank and other authorised banks, and mobile financial services where enabled. Keep the challan number and payment confirmation, as they go in the return and are checked against treasury records.

After submission: acknowledgement, PSR and next steps

The acknowledgement slip proves the date of filing. The PSR is the document banks, RJSC, trade licence authorities, land registries and others ask for. Online filers can download it directly; manual filers obtain it from the circle or the NBR's verification portal.

Filing is not the end of the story. A return can be selected for audit within the time limits in the Act. If you later discover an error, the Act allows a revised return in specified circumstances and time limits, usually before an audit notice is received. Keep all supporting documents for the retention period required by law.

Submission mistakes to avoid

  • Filing at a circle different from the one linked to your e-TIN
  • Using a mobile number that is not registered in your name, which blocks e-Return access
  • Submitting without paying the balance tax and assuming the circle will calculate it
  • Leaving out required attachments for manual returns, such as salary certificates or bank statements
  • Not keeping a copy of the full return exactly as filed

How the process works

  1. Confirm circle and channelWe check your taxes zone and circle and whether online filing is available or mandatory for you.
  2. Final figures sign-offYou approve the final computation and the amount of tax payable.
  3. Pay balance taxWe guide payment by e-Return, A-challan or bank and record the payment reference.
  4. Submit returnWe submit through e-Return or lodge the signed return at the circle with attachments.
  5. Deliver acknowledgement and PSRWe send you the acknowledgement, PSR and a complete copy of the filed return for your records.

Typical timeline: Once the return is prepared and tax is paid, online submission is usually completed the same day; manual submissions and PSR collection typically take a few days depending on the circle's workload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last date for income tax return submission in Bangladesh?

For individuals, Tax Day is generally 30 November following the end of the income year in June. For companies it is generally the 15th day of the seventh month after the income year ends. The NBR may extend these dates by order, so check announcements close to the deadline.

How do I get my PSR after submitting a return?

If you filed through e-Return, you can download the acknowledgement and PSR from your account immediately after submission. If you filed manually, the circle issues the acknowledgement, and the PSR can be obtained from the circle or verified online. Keep a PDF copy because many services ask for it.

Can I submit my return online if I have business income?

The e-Return system has expanded to cover more individual taxpayers, including many with business, rental or investment income. Coverage and features change each year, and some complex cases are easier to file manually. We check whether your profile is supported before choosing the channel.

What happens if I miss Tax Day?

You can still file, but late filing can attract additional tax or interest under the Act and may cost you certain rebates or exemptions. You may also lose the convenience of some services that require a current PSR. Filing as soon as possible after the deadline limits the damage.

Can I correct a return after submission?

Yes, the Income Tax Act 2023 allows a revised return within specified conditions and time limits, generally before an audit or assessment notice is served. You must explain the correction and pay any additional tax with it. If you are already under audit, the issue is handled in the audit process instead.
