Individual Tax in Bangladesh: Obligations by Taxpayer Profile

Salaried, self-employed, landlord, NRB or expatriate: what the tax law actually expects from you.

Quick answer

Individual tax in Bangladesh covers the duties a person has under the Income Tax Act 2023: obtaining an e-TIN, filing an annual return when income exceeds the tax-free threshold or when the law makes a return mandatory, paying tax and keeping the PSR. What applies depends on residency and on your profile, such as salaried employee, business owner, landlord, freelancer or non-resident.

Individual tax questions in Bangladesh usually start with something practical: a bank asks for a PSR, an employer wants your e-TIN, a buyer of your flat needs your return, or you are moving abroad and wonder whether you still need to file. The rules are the same for everyone, but which ones matter depends on who you are and how you earn.

This page organises individual tax obligations by profile. For how the liability is calculated, see our personal income tax page; for the filing itself, see personal income tax return and return submission. Use this page to work out what applies to you first. Getting the profile right first prevents both over-filing and the far more common problem of missed obligations.

Who needs an e-TIN and must file an individual tax return?

Anyone whose total income in the income year exceeds the tax-free threshold must file. In addition, the Act requires a return from people in certain situations even with low or no taxable income, and many services require a PSR. Typical triggers include:

  • Shareholder directors and employees of companies, and partners of firms
  • Holders of trade licences and members of professional bodies
  • Owners of motor vehicles or certain property, and holders of credit cards
  • Applicants for loans, deposits or savings instruments above prescribed limits
  • Individuals participating in tenders or holding import or export registration
  • Anyone who has previously been assessed or filed a return

Individual tax by profile

  • Salaried employees: employer deducts TDS monthly; you still file a return using your salary certificate and report other income and wealth
  • Business owners and sole proprietors: business income is reported in the personal return, and books or a profit statement are needed
  • Professionals and consultants: fees often have TDS deducted by clients; keep certificates as credits
  • Freelancers and IT exporters: foreign earnings brought in through banking channels may qualify for exemption under conditions in the Act, but should still be reported
  • Landlords: rental income is taxable after allowed deductions, and tenants that are companies may deduct tax at source
  • Retirees and investors: profit on savings certificates and bank interest usually carries TDS; check whether it is final settlement or adjustable

Residents, non-residents and NRBs

Residency is decided each income year. A resident pays tax on worldwide income on the progressive slabs; a non-resident pays only on Bangladesh-source income, at the non-resident rate set by the Finance Act. Non-resident Bangladeshis often still have Bangladesh income, such as rent, interest on NRB-specific accounts or capital gains on land, and may need to file. Remittances sent home through banking channels are generally not taxed as income in Bangladesh, but assets bought with them should appear in the wealth statement of whoever owns them.

Foreign nationals working in Bangladesh

Expatriates working under a BIDA, BEPZA, BEZA or NGO Affairs Bureau work permit are taxable on remuneration for work here, including any portion paid abroad. The employer deducts TDS, and the individual files an annual return. Tax records are typically examined when the work permit is renewed and before final departure, so filing every year avoids last-minute problems.

Spouses, dependants and family wealth

Each spouse is a separate taxpayer. A spouse or minor child without their own return can be shown in the main taxpayer's wealth statement; once they have their own e-TIN and return, assets must not be counted twice. Gifts between close family members may be exempt under conditions, but they must be documented and reflected consistently in both returns.

How the process works

  1. Profile reviewWe identify your residency status, income sources and any situation that makes filing mandatory.
  2. e-TIN registration or updateWe register a new e-TIN or update an existing one with your current circle and contact details.
  3. Obligation checklistYou receive a short checklist of returns, deductions and documents that apply to your profile.
  4. Document collectionWe collect salary certificates, bank statements, TDS certificates and asset records.
  5. Hand-over to filingWe prepare and submit the return and deliver the PSR, or guide you to file it yourself.

Typical timeline: An e-TIN can usually be obtained online quickly if NID or passport data is ready; a full profile review and return typically takes one to two weeks depending on documents.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to file a return if I only have a salary?

Yes, if your income exceeds the tax-free threshold or you fall within one of the mandatory filing categories, such as being an employee of a company. Your employer's TDS does not replace the return. You file using your salary certificate, report any other income and your assets and liabilities, and receive the PSR.

Is an e-TIN the same as filing a return?

No. The e-TIN is a 12-digit taxpayer identification number obtained online from the NBR. It shows you are registered, not that you have filed. Once you hold an e-TIN, you are generally expected to file returns. Many services now ask for the PSR, which is proof of filing, rather than the TIN certificate alone.

Does a non-resident Bangladeshi need to pay tax in Bangladesh?

A non-resident is taxed only on income arising in Bangladesh, such as local rent, interest or gains on property sold here. Foreign salary is not taxed in Bangladesh for a non-resident. Residency is tested every income year, so someone who spends long periods at home may become resident.

Are freelancers taxed in Bangladesh?

Freelance income is taxable like any business or professional income, but the Income Tax Act 2023 provides exemption for certain IT-enabled service and freelancing income received from abroad through banking channels, subject to conditions and time limits. You should still hold an e-TIN, report the income and keep bank evidence of inward remittances.

Can a housewife or student have an e-TIN?

Yes. Anyone can register. A homemaker or student with no taxable income may need a TIN to hold savings instruments, own property or open certain accounts. Once registered, filing a simple return each year keeps records clean and provides a PSR when needed.
