Tax exemption in Bangladesh means income that is fully or partly excluded from income tax under the Income Tax Act 2023, mainly through its Sixth Schedule and SROs issued by NBR. Examples include specified personal receipts, certain sectoral incentives such as tax holidays for qualifying industries, and incentives for enterprises in BEZA economic zones, BEPZA zones and hi-tech parks, each subject to conditions and time limits.
A tax exemption in Bangladesh is valuable but conditional. Exemptions are granted by the Act's schedules and by statutory regulatory orders (SROs) that often specify sectors, time periods, filing conditions and evidence. Claiming an exemption that has expired, or failing a condition such as filing a return or receiving payment through a bank, can turn expected tax-free income into a tax demand with interest.
This page helps individuals and businesses understand the main types of exemption, how to establish eligibility, and what to keep on file to defend the claim later. It does not list every exemption, because the list changes with each Finance Act and SRO. Instead, it explains how to check, claim and protect one.

Types of tax exemption in Bangladesh
- Exempt personal income listed in the Sixth Schedule of the Income Tax Act 2023, such as certain receipts from approved funds and specified allowances, subject to conditions
- Sector exemptions or reduced rates for specified businesses, for example certain IT-enabled services, under SROs with fixed validity periods
- Tax holidays or reduced-rate regimes for qualifying industrial undertakings and infrastructure projects
- Incentives for units in economic zones under BEZA, export processing zones under BEPZA and hi-tech parks, as provided in their laws and related NBR orders
- Treaty exemptions or reduced rates for non-residents under a double taxation avoidance agreement
- Exemptions for certain non-profit income of approved organisations, subject to registration and conditions
Exempt income vs tax-free threshold vs rebate
These three are often confused. Exempt income is excluded from total income entirely, so it never enters the tax calculation. The tax-free threshold is the first slice of an individual's taxable income that bears no tax. The investment rebate is a reduction in tax already computed. An individual can benefit from all three in the same year, but each follows its own rules. Exempt income must still be disclosed in the return and reflected in the wealth statement, because it explains the growth of assets.

Conditions that decide whether a tax exemption holds
Most business exemptions come with strings attached. Before relying on one, read the SRO or schedule clause and check each condition against your facts.
- Validity period: many exemptions apply only up to a specified income year
- Eligible activity: the exempt activity must match the defined sector precisely
- Return filing: the taxpayer usually must file a return and show the exempt income separately
- Banking channel: some exemptions require income received or expenses paid through banks
- Separate accounts: businesses with exempt and taxable activities may need to keep separate books
- Registration or certificate from BIDA, BEZA, BEPZA or another authority where required
Exemption for foreign investors and non-residents
Foreign investors considering Bangladesh often hear of tax holidays and zone incentives. In practice, the incentive depends on the type of entity, the location, the sector and the date of commencement, and may interact with treaty provisions in the investor's home country. Dividends and royalties paid abroad are usually still subject to withholding, unless a specific exemption or treaty rate applies and the paperwork is in order. Confirm the incentive in writing before finalising the investment structure.
Common mistakes with tax exemptions
- Relying on an SRO that has expired or been amended
- Treating the whole business as exempt when only one activity qualifies
- Not disclosing exempt income in the return
- Mixing exempt and taxable income in one set of accounts without allocation
- Assuming a zone or tax holiday benefit also covers VAT and customs duties, which are governed by separate laws
How the process works
- Describe the incomeWe understand the nature, source and timing of the income or business activity you want to treat as exempt.
- Find the legal basisWe identify the relevant provision of the Act, schedule or SRO and check it is in force for the income year.
- Test the conditionsEach condition is checked against your records, registrations and banking evidence.
- Document the claimA short memo and supporting schedule are prepared and kept on file.
- Reflect in the returnThe exempt income is disclosed correctly in the return, computation and wealth statement.
Typical timeline: Checking a single exemption claim usually takes a few working days; reviewing a business with mixed exempt and taxable activities can take two to three weeks depending on records.

Frequently asked questions
What income is tax exempt in Bangladesh?
The main list of exempt income is in the Sixth Schedule of the Income Tax Act 2023, supplemented by SROs issued by NBR. It covers specified personal receipts, certain sectoral incentives and some non-profit income. Each item has conditions, so check the current wording for the income year rather than an old list.
Is IT-enabled service income tax exempt in Bangladesh?
Certain ICT and IT-enabled services have enjoyed exemption or reduced rates under specific provisions with validity periods and conditions, such as receiving income through banking channels. The scope and duration have changed over time, so confirm whether your service and income year are covered.
Do I need to show exempt income in my tax return?
Yes. Exempt income is disclosed in the return even though no tax is charged on it. It also explains increases in your assets in the wealth statement. Omitting it can make your wealth growth look unexplained and invite questions from the Taxes Circle, even though the income itself was never taxable.
Do companies in economic zones pay no tax at all?
Units in BEZA economic zones, BEPZA export processing zones and hi-tech parks may receive income tax holidays or reduced rates for specified periods, but conditions apply and other taxes, withholding duties and filing requirements continue. VAT and customs benefits come from separate laws and orders.
Can a tax exemption be withdrawn?
Exemptions granted by SRO can be amended or rescinded by NBR, and a benefit can be lost if conditions are not met. Planning should assume that a time-bound exemption will end and should keep records that prove compliance throughout the period.
