To calculate income tax in Bangladesh, an individual adds taxable income from each head, deducts exempt items, applies the tax-free threshold and slab rates in the current Finance Act to find gross tax, subtracts the investment tax rebate, checks any minimum tax, and then deducts tax already paid through TDS, AIT and advance tax to arrive at net tax payable or refundable.
To calculate income tax correctly, you need the right order of operations as much as the right rates. Bangladesh's Income Tax Act 2023 sets the framework, while the Finance Act each year sets the tax-free threshold, slab rates, minimum tax and rebate limits. Using last year's figures, or an online calculator that has not been updated, is a common source of error.
This page explains the calculation sequence for individual taxpayers. We do not print rate tables here, because they change with each Finance Act. Instead we show how each figure flows into the next, so you can check any calculation, including one produced by your employer's payroll or an online calculator.
On this page
Step 1: work out total income by head
Income is computed separately under each head and then added. Each head has its own rules for what is included and what can be deducted.
- Salary: basic pay, allowances, bonuses and perquisites, less the exemption allowed on salary income under the Act
- Income from house property: annual rent less allowable deductions such as repairs allowance, municipal tax and loan interest
- Business or profession: net profit after allowable expenses
- Financial assets: interest, dividend and similar income, with notes on tax deducted at source
- Capital gains and income from other sources
Step 2: apply the tax-free threshold and slab rates
Individuals pay tax on a progressive scale. The first slice of income is tax-free, and the threshold is higher for certain categories such as women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, third-gender taxpayers and gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters, as specified in the Finance Act. Income above the threshold is taxed slab by slab at increasing rates.
Income on which tax deducted at source is treated as final settlement is usually taken out of the slab calculation and its tax is added separately, so it is not taxed twice.

Step 3: deduct the investment tax rebate
Eligible investments and contributions made during the income year, such as approved savings instruments, provident fund contributions, life insurance premiums and listed securities, earn a rebate that reduces gross tax. The rebate is the lowest of a set of limits defined in the Finance Act. Our rebate calculation page goes through this step in detail.
Steps 4 and 5: minimum tax, surcharge and taxes already paid
After rebate, compare the result with the minimum tax applicable to your location, since the Finance Act sets minimum tax amounts that can differ between city corporation areas, other city areas and elsewhere, for individuals with income above the threshold. Pay the higher figure. Individuals with net wealth above the limit set in the Finance Act may also pay a surcharge, calculated on the tax amount.
Finally, subtract tax already paid for the year: TDS from salary, AIT on vehicles, TDS on bank interest and savings certificates where creditable, and any advance tax instalments. The result is the tax payable with the return, or an amount that may be refundable. Keep certificates for every credit, because the Taxes Circle can ask for them.
Putting the calculation together: an outline
A clean income tax calculation can be laid out on one page in this order: taxable income under each head; total income; less income subject to final tax; taxable income for slab purposes; tax on slabs; add tax on final-tax income where relevant; less investment rebate; compare with minimum tax and take the higher; add surcharge if applicable; less TDS, AIT and advance tax; net payable or refundable.
Laying it out this way makes errors easy to spot, and it is the same structure the Taxes Circle uses when checking a return. If your figure differs from your employer's estimate, the difference is usually in one identifiable line.
Errors that distort an income tax calculation
- Using an outdated tax-free threshold or slab table
- Including final-tax income in the slab calculation
- Ignoring the minimum tax for your area
- Claiming rebate on investments not eligible under current rules
- Missing TDS credits on bank interest or salary
- Forgetting perquisites such as a company car or housing in salary income
How the process works
- Share income detailsSend salary certificates, bank statements and investment proofs by WhatsApp or email.
- Head-wise computationWe compute taxable income under each head and separate any final-tax income.
- Apply current ratesThreshold, slabs, rebate, minimum tax and surcharge are applied from the Finance Act for your income year.
- Credit taxes paidTDS, AIT and advance tax are matched to certificates and deducted.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find the current income tax rates in Bangladesh?
Rates, the tax-free threshold, minimum tax and rebate limits are set by the Finance Act passed with each national budget and published by NBR. Always use the version applicable to the income year you are calculating, since figures for different years can differ, and mid-year changes through SROs are possible.
Is income tax calculated on gross salary?
Not exactly. Salary income includes basic pay, allowances, bonuses and perquisites, but the Act allows a specified exemption on salary income, and certain receipts are treated separately. The taxable salary after this exemption is what enters the slab calculation. Your employer's salary certificate should show each component.
Why is my tax higher than the slab calculation shows?
Common reasons are minimum tax applying in your area, a surcharge on high net wealth, final-tax income being added separately, or rebate being limited by the Finance Act's caps. Check each of these steps in order, and confirm that perquisites such as housing or a car were valued correctly in salary.
Does tax deducted on savings certificate interest reduce my tax?
It depends on how the current rules treat that deduction. Where it is creditable, it is subtracted from your total tax; where it is final settlement, the income is excluded from the slab calculation and no further tax is payable on it. Check the treatment for your income year and keep the bank's certificate.
Can I rely on an online income tax calculator?
Use it as a first estimate only. Many calculators do not handle final-tax income, minimum tax by area, surcharge or the rebate caps correctly, and some are not updated after the Finance Act. Verify the result against your documents and the current rates before you file the return.
