VAT & SD Services in Bangladesh
BIN registration, monthly Mushak 9.1 returns, VAT advisory and guidance on the VAT & SD Act 2012 and SROs.
Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty in Bangladesh are imposed under the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 and the VAT Rules 2016, which replaced the VAT Act 1991 from 1 July 2019. Businesses that supply taxable goods or services must obtain a Business Identification Number (BIN), issue Mushak 6.3 invoices, keep purchase and sales registers, deduct VAT at source where required and file a monthly Mushak 9.1 return. We register businesses for BIN, set up compliant VAT processes, file returns and interpret the SROs and general orders that change rates and exemptions.

Is BIN the same as e-TIN?
No. e-TIN is your income tax identification number under the Income Tax Act 2023, issued through the NBR e-TIN system. BIN is your VAT registration under the VAT and SD Act 2012. Most businesses need both, and the e-TIN is one of the inputs for the BIN application, so obtain the e-TIN first.
What is the standard VAT rate in Bangladesh?
The standard VAT rate under the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 is 15%. Reduced rates apply to certain goods and services listed in the Act's schedules, some supplies are exempt, and supplementary duty applies to specified items. Rates can change through the Finance Act or SROs, so always check the current position for your product or service.
Is the VAT Act 1991 still in force?
No. It was repealed by the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012, which came into effect on 1 July 2019. However, the 2012 Act's saving provisions mean that liabilities, proceedings and rights arising under the old law for earlier periods are generally still dealt with under it. New transactions are governed only by the 2012 Act.
When did the VAT & SD Act 2012 come into effect?
The Act was passed in 2012 but implementation was deferred. It came into force on 1 July 2019, replacing the VAT Act 1991, together with the VAT Rules 2016. Matters relating to earlier periods are generally still handled under the 1991 law through the saving provisions.
What does SRO stand for?
SRO stands for Statutory Regulatory Order. It is a form of subordinate legislation issued under powers granted by an Act of Parliament and published in the Bangladesh Gazette. In tax matters, most SROs come from the NBR or the Internal Resources Division of the Ministry of Finance.
