Rebate calculation in Bangladesh determines how much an individual's income tax is reduced for eligible investments made during the income year, such as approved savings instruments, provident fund contributions, life insurance premiums and listed securities. Under the Income Tax Act 2023 the rebate is the lowest of several limits set by the Finance Act, linked to taxable income, actual eligible investment and a fixed ceiling.
The investment tax rebate is the main legal way for individuals in Bangladesh to reduce their income tax. Yet rebate calculation is where many returns go wrong: people invest in instruments that do not qualify, claim the full investment as rebate, or invest too much in one year and too little the next. A good calculation shows both this year's rebate and how to plan next year's investments.
This page is for salaried employees, professionals and business owners who want to understand or check their rebate. Rebate limits and the list of eligible investments are set by the Income Tax Act 2023 and amended by the Finance Act, so we describe the method and always confirm current figures before calculating.

Which investments qualify for tax rebate?
The Act's schedule of allowable investments has been revised several times. The categories commonly eligible, subject to the conditions and caps in force, include:
- Life insurance premiums for the taxpayer, spouse or children, within limits
- Contributions to a recognised provident fund, including the employer's contribution where applicable
- Approved savings instruments such as specified government savings certificates and bonds, within caps
- Deposit pension schemes with scheduled banks or financial institutions, within the annual limit
- Investment in securities listed on the stock exchanges and approved mutual funds
- Donations to specified charitable, educational or national causes, and contributions to approved funds
The rebate calculation: the lowest-of test
The rebate is not simply a percentage of what you invested. The Finance Act sets several limits and you take the lowest. In recent years these have been framed as a percentage of taxable income, a percentage of actual eligible investment, and a fixed maximum amount. Because the percentages and the ceiling are amended from time to time, confirm the figures for your income year.
In practice: first total your eligible investments, capping any instrument that has its own limit. Then compute each limit and take the smallest figure as your rebate. That amount is deducted from gross tax, after which minimum tax is checked.

Documents needed for rebate calculation
- Premium receipts and policy documents for life insurance
- Provident fund statements or employer certificates
- Savings certificate purchase records and bank statements showing payment
- DPS statements from the bank showing monthly deposits for the year
- BO account statements and portfolio statements for listed shares and mutual funds
- Donation receipts from eligible institutions and funds
Planning investments for an efficient rebate
Because the rebate is capped, investing beyond the limit does not reduce tax further. The aim is to reach the limit with investments you would make anyway for savings and protection. Start early in the income year rather than buying in a rush in June. For salaried taxpayers, provident fund contributions often cover a large part of the eligible amount, so check that figure before adding more.
Also remember that the rebate only reduces tax that is otherwise payable. If minimum tax applies or your tax is already low, extra investment may produce little or no additional benefit.
Rebate calculation mistakes
- Claiming investments made outside the income year
- Including principal repayments or encashments as new investment
- Claiming more than the specific cap for an instrument
- Claiming rebate for a late return where the Act restricts it
- Not showing the investment as an asset in the wealth statement
A worked rebate calculation, without the numbers
Take a salaried taxpayer who contributed to a recognised provident fund, paid a life insurance premium, ran a monthly DPS and bought listed shares during the year. First, each item is checked against its own cap: if the DPS deposits exceed the annual limit for DPS, only the capped amount counts. The capped items are added to give total eligible investment.
Next, the three limits are calculated: the percentage of taxable income, the percentage of eligible investment and the fixed ceiling, all from the Finance Act for that income year. Suppose the percentage of eligible investment is the smallest; that becomes the rebate. It is deducted from gross tax, and if the result falls below minimum tax for the taxpayer's area, minimum tax is paid instead. The working is kept with the return so the Taxes Circle can follow it.
How the process works
- List investmentsWe list everything you invested or contributed during the income year with documents.
- Check eligibilityEach item is tested against the current schedule of allowable investments and its own cap.
- Apply the limitsThe Finance Act limits are computed and the lowest is applied as rebate.
- Integrate with taxThe rebate is deducted from gross tax and minimum tax is checked.
- Plan aheadWe suggest how to spread next year's eligible investments to use the rebate efficiently.
Typical timeline: A rebate check is usually completed within one to two working days once investment documents are received.

Frequently asked questions
How is the tax rebate calculated in Bangladesh?
Total your eligible investments for the income year, applying any instrument-specific caps. Then compute the limits the Finance Act sets, typically a percentage of taxable income, a percentage of eligible investment and a fixed ceiling, and take the lowest. That figure is your rebate and is deducted from gross tax.
Is the rebate equal to the amount I invested?
No. The rebate is a reduction in tax, calculated as a limited percentage. Investing a large amount reduces tax only up to the caps. Many taxpayers over-invest in one instrument expecting a matching tax saving that the law does not give.
Do savings certificates qualify for tax rebate?
Specified government savings instruments have been eligible within limits, but the rules and caps have been amended over the years. Check whether your particular certificate, the purchase amount and the purchase date qualify for the income year in question, and keep the purchase record and bank evidence for the file.
Can I claim rebate if I file my return late?
The Income Tax Act 2023 restricts certain benefits for returns filed after Tax Day, and investment rebate has been among them. Filing on time is the safest way to keep your rebate. Confirm the current rule before relying on a late claim.
Does a DPS give tax rebate?
A deposit pension scheme with a scheduled bank or financial institution has generally been an eligible investment up to an annual limit. Only the deposits made during the income year count, not the accumulated balance, and you need the bank's statement as evidence.
