Personal Income Tax in Bangladesh

Understand what you owe, why you owe it, and how to plan the year so the return is never a surprise.

Quick answer

Personal income tax in Bangladesh is the tax an individual pays on income earned in an income year (normally July to June) under the Income Tax Act 2023. Income from salary, business, rent, investments and other sources is added together, taxed on progressive slabs set by the annual Finance Act, then reduced by the investment rebate and by TDS or advance tax already paid.

Personal income tax in Bangladesh is calculated once a year, but the decisions that shape it are made across the whole year: how your salary is structured, what you invest in, how rent is collected and whether tax is deducted at source on your bank interest. This page focuses on liability and planning, so you understand the numbers before you sit down to file.

If you are ready to file now, see our pages on the personal income tax return and return submission. Here we explain who is taxable, how taxable income is built up, which credits reduce it, and the planning steps a Dhaka practitioner would normally suggest to a salaried professional, landlord or small business owner.

Who is liable to personal income tax?

Liability depends on residency. A resident individual is taxed on worldwide income; a non-resident only on income arising in Bangladesh. You are resident if you stay 183 days or more in the income year, or 90 days or more in the year and at least 365 days in the preceding four years. A resident whose total income exceeds the tax-free threshold set by the Finance Act owes tax, and many people must file a return even below that threshold because they need a PSR.

How taxable income is calculated

The Act groups income under heads. Each head has its own rules for what is taxable and what can be deducted, and the results are added to reach total income.

  • Salary: basic pay, allowances, bonuses and perquisites, with a prescribed exemption for part of salary income
  • Rent from house property: gross rent less allowable deductions for repairs, interest on loans and municipal taxes
  • Agricultural income, with its own deduction rules
  • Income from business or profession, net of allowable expenses
  • Capital gains on sale of land, buildings, shares and other assets
  • Income from financial assets such as savings certificate profit, bank interest and dividends, often already subject to final or adjustable TDS
  • Income from other sources

Tax slabs, rebate and minimum tax

Tax is charged on progressive slabs. The tax-free threshold is higher for women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, gazetted freedom fighters and certain other groups. The slab rates, thresholds and minimum tax amounts are revised regularly by the Finance Act, so we always compute using the rules for the relevant assessment year rather than last year's table.

An investment rebate reduces tax for eligible investments such as approved savings instruments, DPS, life insurance premium, provident fund contributions and listed securities. The rebate is capped by a formula linked to taxable income and the amount actually invested, so investing more than the cap gives no further benefit.

Planning your personal income tax during the year

  • Check your salary certificate structure early in the year so allowances and perquisites are reported correctly
  • Track TDS on bank interest, savings certificates and dividends; keep the certificates, as they are credits against your liability
  • Spread eligible investments through the year instead of rushing in June
  • Keep rent receipts and deposit rent through a bank where the law expects it
  • Record new assets and loans as they happen; your wealth statement must reconcile with income at year end
  • If your expected tax is above the advance-tax threshold, plan for quarterly advance tax instalments

Mistakes that increase personal tax liability

  • Treating final-settlement TDS income as fully exempt and leaving it out of the wealth reconciliation
  • Claiming rebate for investments made after the income year closed
  • Ignoring capital gains on land or flat sales, where tax is often collected at registration but must still be shown
  • Wealth growth that is larger than reported income, which invites questions in an audit
  • Missing the return deadline and losing certain benefits, plus facing the late-filing consequences in the Act

How the process works

  1. Income and residency reviewWe confirm your residency status and list every income source for the income year.
  2. Head-wise computationWe compute income under each head, applying exemptions and deductions allowed by the Income Tax Act 2023.
  3. Rebate optimisationWe check eligible investments against the rebate formula and advise on any remaining room before 30 June.
  4. Credit reconciliationWe match TDS certificates and advance tax challans against your computation.
  5. Wealth reconciliationWe reconcile opening and closing net wealth with income and family expenditure.
  6. Planning noteYou receive a short note with your estimated liability and actions for the next income year.

Typical timeline: A liability review usually takes three to seven working days once documents are shared; complex cases with property sales or foreign income can take longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the income year for personal income tax in Bangladesh?

For individuals, the income year normally runs from 1 July to 30 June. Income earned in that period is assessed in the following assessment year, and the return is generally due by Tax Day, 30 November, unless the NBR extends it. For example, income earned from July 2025 to June 2026 is reported in the return filed by November 2026.

Do I need to pay tax if my income is below the threshold?

If your total income is below the tax-free threshold for your category you owe no tax, but you may still need to file a return. Many services, such as certain bank loans, credit cards, trade licences and property registration, require a PSR, which you only get by submitting a return. A zero-tax return is common.

How does the investment rebate work?

You invest in eligible instruments during the income year, such as DPS, approved savings certificates, life insurance or listed shares. The rebate is a reduction in tax, calculated as a percentage of the allowable investment, which itself is capped relative to your taxable income. The exact percentages and caps are set by the Finance Act for each year.

Is tax deducted from my salary the final tax?

Not necessarily. Your employer deducts TDS monthly based on an estimate, but your final liability depends on all your income, rebate and other credits. You might owe a small balance with the return or have paid slightly more. The return reconciles total liability against TDS, advance tax and any other tax already paid.

Are women and senior citizens taxed differently?

Yes. Women, taxpayers aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities, gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters and some other groups get a higher tax-free threshold than the general category. The slab rates above the threshold are the same. Check the current Finance Act for the exact threshold that applies to your assessment year.
