A to Z Income Tax Guide for Bangladesh

Every core income tax concept in Bangladesh, from assessment year to zero return, with links to deeper guides.

Quick answer

Income tax in Bangladesh is governed by the Income Tax Act 2023, administered by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) through Taxes Zones and Circles. Individuals and entities register for an e-TIN, compute tax on income earned in the income year, deduct and pay tax at source where required, file a return by Tax Day and keep the PSR. This A to Z guide explains each step and term.

This A to Z income tax guide is written for people who need the whole picture in one place: a new business owner, a returning NRB, an HR manager, a foreign investor or someone filing for the first time. It explains the vocabulary of Bangladesh income tax in plain English and shows how the pieces fit together, from registration to dispute resolution.

The Income Tax Act 2023 replaced the Income Tax Ordinance 1984, and rates, thresholds and many limits change each year through the Finance Act and NBR orders. We therefore explain concepts rather than quote figures. Each section links to a detailed page on our site where you can go deeper or ask us for help.

How the income tax cycle fits together

For an individual: register for an e-TIN, keep records through the year, let your employer and banks deduct TDS, make eligible investments for rebate, prepare the return after 30 June, reconcile wealth, pay any balance, submit by Tax Day and keep the PSR. If selected for audit, respond with evidence; if assessed unfairly, appeal on time.

For a company: register for an e-TIN, set up TDS on all relevant payments, file withholding returns, pay advance tax, close and audit the accounts, prepare the tax computation and transfer pricing documents where needed, file by the company Tax Day and manage any audit. VAT under the VAT and SD Act 2012 runs alongside this as a separate monthly cycle.

Where people go wrong

  • Relying on last year's rates after a new Finance Act
  • Holding an e-TIN but never filing, which can create arrears and complications later
  • Treating TDS as the whole story and skipping the return
  • Not reconciling wealth, so property or savings growth looks unexplained
  • Ignoring notices sent to an old address or email
  • Missing appeal deadlines after an assessment

How the process works

  1. RegisterObtain an e-TIN online using NID or passport details, and for businesses a BIN for VAT where required.
  2. Track income and deductionsKeep records of income, TDS certificates, investments and assets throughout the income year.
  3. Compute taxAfter the year ends, compute income by head, apply rebate and credits, and check minimum tax.
  4. Pay and filePay any balance and submit the return online or at the circle by Tax Day.
  5. Keep proofDownload or collect the acknowledgement and PSR and archive the full return.
  6. Handle audits and appealsRespond to notices on time and use the appeal or ADR route if you disagree with an assessment.

Typical timeline: The income tax cycle is annual: income year July to June for most taxpayers, individual returns by 30 November unless extended, and company returns by their Tax Day, with TDS, withholding and advance tax obligations running throughout the year.

Frequently asked questions

Which law governs income tax in Bangladesh now?

The Income Tax Act 2023, which replaced the Income Tax Ordinance 1984. It is amended each year by the Finance Act, and the NBR issues rules, SROs and circulars that explain or change details. When reading older guides, remember that section numbers and some concepts have changed under the new Act.

What is the difference between income year and assessment year?

The income year is the period in which income is earned, normally 1 July to 30 June. The assessment year is the following twelve-month period in which that income is reported and assessed. So income earned from July 2025 to June 2026 belongs to assessment year 2026-27, with the individual return generally due by 30 November 2026.

Who collects income tax in Bangladesh?

The National Board of Revenue administers income tax through Taxes Zones, each divided into Taxes Circles led by a Deputy Commissioner of Taxes. There is also a Large Taxpayers Unit for major taxpayers. Your circle is assigned based on your e-TIN and is where you file manual returns and receive notices.

Is a PSR the same as a tax clearance certificate?

No. A PSR only proves that you submitted a return for a given assessment year. A tax clearance or similar certificate confirms that no tax is outstanding and is issued in specific situations, such as certain foreign travel or remittance cases. Many day-to-day services ask for the PSR.

Where can I start if I have never filed before?

Register for an e-TIN online, then gather your income documents, bank statements and asset records for the last income year. Use the e-Return system if your profile is supported, or have an adviser prepare the return. Our personal income tax and individual tax pages explain the obligations step by step.

Does this guide cover VAT?

Only briefly. VAT and supplementary duty are governed by the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 and VAT Rules 2016, with their own registration (BIN), invoices and monthly Mushak 9.1 returns. See our VAT services and VAT & SD Act 2012 pages for a dedicated explanation.
