Tax Return Preparation in Bangladesh

Getting the numbers, schedules and evidence right before anything is submitted to the NBR.

Quick answer

Tax return preparation in Bangladesh is the work done before filing: collecting income and tax-paid evidence, computing taxable income under the Income Tax Act 2023, completing the return form and schedules, and reconciling the statement of assets and liabilities. Good preparation means the return can be submitted online or at the taxes circle without errors that later trigger an audit.

Tax return preparation is where most of the real work happens. Submitting a return takes minutes once it is ready; preparing it properly can take hours of sorting bank statements, chasing TDS certificates, checking investment proofs and reconciling wealth. Errors made here are the ones that show up later in audit notices.

This page explains how we prepare returns for individuals, partnership firms and companies, what we need from you, and the checks we run before anything is filed. If your return is already prepared and you only need it lodged, see our return submission page. Every figure in the return should be traceable to a document you can produce if the circle asks.

What tax return preparation involves

  • Identifying every income source and the head it falls under
  • Applying exemptions, allowances and deductions allowed by the Act
  • Computing tax on the correct slabs or corporate rate, then minimum tax where relevant
  • Calculating the investment rebate for individuals
  • Matching TDS, AIT and advance tax credits to certificates and challans
  • Preparing the statement of assets, liabilities and expenses, and the life-style statement where required
  • Completing the return form and schedules for the right taxpayer category

Document checklist for preparing your return

The list depends on the taxpayer, but for an individual we usually ask for the following. For companies and firms we add audited financial statements, fixed asset and depreciation schedules, and the TDS and VAT ledgers.

  • e-TIN certificate and last year's return with acknowledgement
  • Salary certificate and any bonus or allowance statements
  • Bank statements and year-end balance certificates for all accounts
  • Certificates of TDS on interest, savings certificates, dividends and professional fees
  • Investment proofs: DPS, insurance premium receipts, provident fund statements, share portfolio statements
  • Rent agreements and receipts; deeds and payment records for property bought or sold
  • Loan statements, credit card statements and details of personal liabilities

The wealth reconciliation check

For individuals, the most important test in preparation is whether net wealth at the end of the year equals opening net wealth plus income, exempt receipts and gifts, minus family expenses and tax paid. A gap either way is a red flag. We investigate gaps before filing, because an unexplained increase in wealth can be treated as undisclosed income, and an unexplained decrease suggests unrecorded spending or missing liabilities.

Preparing returns for firms and companies

For a company, preparation starts from audited accounts and moves through a tax computation that adjusts accounting profit: adding back disallowed expenses, replacing accounting depreciation with tax depreciation, applying loss carry-forward, and comparing regular tax with minimum tax. We also prepare the schedules for TDS credits, advance tax and, where applicable, the statement of international transactions for transfer pricing. Partnership firms follow a similar path, with the share of profit then reported in each partner's return.

Preparation errors we see most often

  • Using last year's slab table after a new Finance Act has changed it
  • Leaving out income that carried final-settlement TDS, which still belongs in the return
  • Showing a flat or land at a value that does not match the deed and payment records
  • Claiming rebate on an investment that matured or was encashed during the year
  • Company computations that ignore disallowance for unpaid TDS or cash payments
  • Filing the wrong return form for the taxpayer category

  4. Wealth or accounts reconciliationWe reconcile the wealth statement for individuals, or tie the computation to audited accounts for companies.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prepare a personal tax return?

For a salaried person with a few bank accounts and investments, preparation typically takes a few working days once documents are complete. Cases with property sales, rental income, business income or foreign assets take longer. Most delays come from missing TDS certificates or bank balance confirmations, so starting early helps.

What if I cannot find all my TDS certificates?

Ask the deducting bank, employer or company for duplicates. Some deductions can also be verified through NBR systems. If a certificate genuinely cannot be obtained, the credit may be hard to claim. We list what is missing early so you have time to request it before the deadline.

Can I prepare my own return and have you review it?

Yes. Many clients prepare a draft themselves, especially through the e-Return system, and ask us to review it before submission. We check income heads, rebate, credits and the wealth reconciliation, then send back corrections. This is often cheaper than full preparation for straightforward cases.

What is the life-style statement?

It is a statement of personal and family expenses for the year, such as household costs, education, travel, utilities and tax paid. It supports the wealth reconciliation by showing where income was spent. Certain taxpayers are required to submit it with the return, and it should be realistic for your circumstances.

Do companies need audited accounts before preparing the return?

Yes. A company return is generally filed with audited financial statements. Preparation of the tax computation can begin on draft accounts, but final figures must be tied to the signed audit report. Planning the audit timetable is therefore part of planning the company's tax return.
