Headhunting and Executive Search in Bangladesh

Confidential search for the senior and specialist people your business cannot afford to get wrong.

Quick answer

Headhunting in Bangladesh is a confidential executive search service that identifies and approaches senior or hard-to-find candidates, usually people not actively job hunting, for roles such as country manager, CFO, head of tax or plant head. It combines market mapping, discreet approaches, structured assessment, reference checks and offer structuring that accounts for Labour Act terms and salary tax.

Headhunting in Bangladesh is different from advertising a vacancy. The best finance directors, compliance heads and plant managers here are usually employed, well paid and not reading job portals. Reaching them requires research, a credible approach and a process that protects both the candidate's and the client's confidentiality.

This page is for boards, foreign investors and owner-managers hiring one critical person, often a leadership or specialist role where a wrong hire would be expensive. For volume hiring of operational staff, see our manpower recruitment page; for placing staff on our payroll on your behalf, see professional employment.

When headhunting makes sense

  • Country manager or managing director for a new foreign subsidiary or branch
  • Chief financial officer, head of tax and VAT, or financial controller
  • Head of HR or compliance for a growing group
  • Plant, operations or supply chain heads in manufacturing
  • Niche technical specialists with very small candidate pools
  • Confidential replacements where the incumbent is still in post

Our headhunting method

A search starts with a precise brief: what the person must achieve in the first 12 to 24 months, who they report to, the authority they will hold and the realistic compensation range. From there we map target organisations and roles, identify individuals and approach them discreetly with an outline of the opportunity, revealing the client's name only when both sides are ready.

Shortlisted candidates go through structured interviews, technical assessment where relevant and careful referencing. For finance and tax roles, we test practical knowledge of the Income Tax Act 2023, the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 and the reporting framework, because a CV listing these laws says little about real competence.

Structuring the offer for a senior hire

Senior packages in Bangladesh often include car, housing, provident fund, gratuity, performance bonus and sometimes long-term incentives. Each element has a different treatment for salary tax and perquisites under the Income Tax Act 2023, so the same cost to the company can produce very different take-home pay. We model the package so the candidate sees net income clearly and the employer withholds tax correctly from the first month.

Contract terms need care too. Many senior managers fall outside the Labour Act definition of worker because their role is managerial or administrative, so their protections come mainly from the contract. Notice, confidentiality and post-employment restrictions should be drafted with the Contract Act 1872 in mind; broad non-compete clauses are generally treated as restraints of trade and are hard to enforce.

Hiring a foreign executive

When the best candidate is a foreign national, the employer must obtain a work permit from BIDA for most commercial and industrial companies, from BEZA or BEPZA for units in economic zones or EPZs, or from the NGO Affairs Bureau for NGOs. The candidate normally enters on an employment visa and the employer must arrange security clearance and register the person for income tax. Building these steps into the hiring timeline avoids an executive who arrives but cannot legally start.

Common headhunting pitfalls

  • A vague brief that changes after candidates have been approached
  • Leaking the search, which unsettles the incumbent and the market
  • Offering a gross figure without explaining tax and net pay
  • Relying on informal references from the candidate's friends
  • Ignoring the candidate's notice period under the current contract
  • Starting a foreign hire before the work permit is approved

How the process works

  1. Brief and scorecardWe agree the role outcomes, competencies, reporting line and compensation range in writing.
  2. Market mappingTarget companies and roles are identified and a long list of potential candidates is built.
  3. Discreet approachCandidates are contacted confidentially and interest is tested before any names are shared.
  4. Assessment and shortlistInterviews, technical tests and preliminary referencing produce a shortlist with written evaluations.
  5. Offer and negotiationWe model the package for tax, advise on contract terms and support negotiation through acceptance.
  6. Transition supportWe follow up through notice period, onboarding and, for expatriates, work permit timing.

Typical timeline: A senior search typically runs from six to twelve weeks to an accepted offer, depending on role complexity and market depth, followed by the candidate's notice period and, for foreign hires, the work permit processing time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between headhunting and recruitment?

Recruitment usually advertises a role and selects from applicants. Headhunting actively identifies and approaches specific people, most of whom are not looking for a job, and is used for senior or scarce roles. It is slower and more research-heavy but reaches candidates that advertising never reaches.

How long does executive search take in Bangladesh?

Most searches reach an accepted offer in six to twelve weeks, depending on the role and the candidate pool. Add the chosen candidate's notice period, which for senior managers is often one to three months under their existing contract, and work permit processing if the candidate is a foreign national.

Is a non-compete clause enforceable in Bangladesh?

Section 27 of the Contract Act 1872 makes agreements in restraint of trade void, with narrow exceptions. Restrictions during employment and well-drafted confidentiality and non-solicitation clauses are more defensible than a broad ban on working for competitors after leaving. Draft senior contracts with this in mind.

Can you headhunt a foreign national for a Bangladesh role?

Yes. We can search internationally and then plan the employment visa, work permit and security clearance through BIDA, BEZA, BEPZA or the NGO Affairs Bureau as applicable. The employer must also register the expatriate for income tax and withhold tax on salary from the start of employment.

Do senior executives fall under the Labour Act?

Often not fully. The Labour Act's definition of worker excludes people employed mainly in managerial or administrative capacities. Their terms are governed largely by the employment contract and general law, so notice, termination and benefits must be clearly written into the appointment letter.

Is headhunting confidential for the employer?

Yes. We approach candidates without naming the client until mutual interest is established and a confidentiality undertaking is in place. This is particularly important when replacing someone still in the role or when the hire signals a strategic move the business does not yet want to announce.
